Dr. William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut. Several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Dr. McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization, including MANAGERIAL CONTROL AND PERFORMANCE (D.C. Heath and Company). His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), He has also published in a variety of refereed journals, including Economic Inquiry, National Tax Journal, Quarterly Review of Economic and Business, Journal of Industrial Economics, Kyklos, Econ Journal Watch, and Public Choice. His principles of economics textbooks have been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia, and have been adapted for Australia and for India. He is the founding editor of THE TEACHING ECONOMIST, a newsletter that for a quarter of a century has focused on teaching economics at the college level. This reference book is the "bible" for Vanagon owners/wrench turners. It is clearly designed for the highly trained mechanic, but provides great detail so that the shade tree mechanic troubleshoot and make some repairs as well. The cost is about the same as an hour of labor at a Vanagon Shop.

Bought this some time ago for our 1991 fully restored VW Vanagon Camper. Sold the VW. The book went with it. The book is superb. Highly recommended by someone who restored the VW bottom to top, front to back. We drove it on camping trips about 15,000 miles. Again, the book is great for preventive maintenance and trouble shooting on the road.

Has everything you ever really need to know and more about your Vanagon. Yes it is very technical, but for most of the jobs you would need this book for, if you are doing it yourself to begin with, you can understand it. The hardcover is great also. No need to worry about it getting destroyed easily like the softcover ones. I'd suggest buying it before it gets even more expensive. Although it is very expensive for a book, this thing is thick like a textbook, and compared to most mathematical and science related textbooks for schools, it is a bargain.

Let's get something straight right off the bat about this manual, it's the Factory Repair Manual, originally intended for mechanics at the dealership. It assumes you are experienced and already know which end of a screwdriver works. Its not going to teach you 'how' to work on your Vanagon, it's the 'bible' on the repair procedures on for your Vanagon. I suspect the negative reviews for this manual are mostly from 'newbies' and novices. What this manual is most useful for is the factory approved method for servicing your Vanagon, not "Auto Mechanics 101'. So if you're looking for a manual to teach you how to work on your Vanagon, THIS IS NOT IT! On the other hand, if you looking for a manual that explains the factory approved method of working on your Vanagon, with all the necessary details and specifications, "BINGO". Naturally, its a translation of a German manual so you have to take that into account too, a translation is only as good as the translator, trust me, I work for a German company in their US plant and this is a very common problem. So be warned about what you're getting if you order this manual.

I almost didn't buy this book based on the other, negative reviews. I am happy that I went against their advice.The lack of a real index proved to be a major pain in the rear. The book is stictly a reference manual, and as a reference it is quite good. The pictures, drawings and diagrams are worth the price alone. There is little troubleshooting advice. I just completed some major overhaul work on my engine, and I could not have done it without the book.The bottom line is that the book is a reference, not a how-to manual.To troubleshoot the fuel injection/electronic ignition I bought another Bently book: Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management by Charles Probst.. Maybe its because I knew almost nothing about EFI, but I thought that the Bosch book was the best auto book I've ever purchased. I give it 5 stars and consider it an essential companion to my Bently Vanagon book.

Bentley manuals are a must-have for anyone that works on their own VW or Audi. Don't let the initial investment scare you off. This book will pay for itself the first time you use it. Torque specs, wiring diagrams, and installation/removal step-by-steps.They're not perfect, but they're better than Haynes or any other book out there.

This book pretty much has everything known about a vanagon. If you have never worked on a vehicle before, it might get overwhelming, but for the most part it is easy to read and follow. I do wish it gave you access to the pages online once you buy it, so if you needed to print off a wiring diagram you didn't have to scan the gigantic book.

I think I have just scratched the surface with this manual.I was able to understand my engines hydraulic lifters and why they are noisy.Seems that worn lifters lose thier oil if sitting to long. (Bleed out)I feel that I may be able to replace the lifters by myself using the manual.I was lost before and now I'm informed.A must have for vanagon owners that can twist a few wrenches.I would recommend this to other Vanagon owners.
