I believe I bought Chinese Village Cookbook when it was published (1975) and for 20 years it was probably the most used cookbook in my collection. Not only is it delightfully written, but the recipes taste like really good Chinese food but without the 50 ingredients and hours of prep. When my (blessedly former) husband and I split he agreed to send me my cookbooks after our house sold. Instead, he chose to take them to the dump. (his story) I was irritated, if not surprised by his behavior primarily because I thought I would never find a copy of this book again.I'd forgotten the title, but remembered it was green with a little house on the cover. Though I've order slews of stuff from Amazon over the years it never occurred to me that I might find the obscure little green Chinese cook book if I tried. Finally, two decades later, I entered "Chinese cook book" in search, poured through the listings, and there it was[!!!!!!]. I couldn't order it fast enough. It's just as excellent as I remembered and I'm so happy to know its author, Rhoda Yee, is still alive and well and cooking up a storm in the San Francisco area. (and has written more books. . .must get them all...)

Just received the book today, and although I haven't tried the recipes yet, just looking at the names of the recipes, they're almost all for foods my mom used to make when my siblings and I were growing up! Ultimate comfort foods, including Jook, Steamed Minced Pork with Water Chestnuts, Steamed Eggs, Parchment Chicken, Fuzzy Melon Soup, Winter Melon Soup, Steamed Spareribs in Black Bean Sauce and Lo Han Jai. Excited to try these recipes out!

I'm getting practical with my choices for Asian cookbooks, and I really want more REAL recipes, especially from those who still remember (at the time of the original publication, that is) what it was like to live in Mainland China. And I really like the rustic nature of these recipes as well as the history remembered. Okay, this has one of the best egg fu yung recipes I've found. Well, no restaurant around here seems to even remember what that is!The photos are fab. I really LOVE the one of the village tea house with the hens roosted just under the roof! That alone and the story behind it was worth the book itself!

The recipes are authentic. The tastes are great and the recipes are generally easy to follow. If I wanted to be critical, I'd say I don't need the basic cooking techniques nor the ingredient descriptions. But being Cantonese (born is the US) I've been around Cantonese cooking all my life. So I can understand these chapters are important to those not born into a Cantonese family. I just bought my third copy recently. My first one was given to me in the 70's which disappeared. I bought a second one and again it disappeared... I think members in my family must have been "borrowing" mine... So, now I'm on my 3rd one...

Mom took cooking lessons from Rhoda Yee many years ago. She lived in our neighborhood. I grew up eating the very best Chinese food that my Mother, from Nashville, TN, learned to cook from Rhoda. Wonderful memories and very easy to follow...recipes are delicious and the best!!

Cute book from 1975. My boyfriend is Cantonese and I am always trying to find ways to make him feel at home. This book is simple and to the point. Most things you can find at the local market and no need to go to an Asian one. Some do require that but most do not.

With all of the books popping up trying to create fusians of every type of food on this planet, it is really nice to get back to basics, and Rhoda Yee's books are just that, basic traditional chinese cuisine. I am very happy that I purchased this book, now I can make a dinner for the entire family myself. Isn't cooking so much more personal and better for you? This book nicely compliments her Dim Sum book. There are soup recipes, rice and noodle recipes, chicken, beef and Pork recipes and a few vegetarian dishes. This is a really nicely rounded book. Not too much of one thing.

I love Chinese food and this book was chock full of delicious recipes! I have prepared several recipes already for friends and they absolutely loved the outcome.

I was looking for a unique Christmas gift for my globe trotting son. This book has spectacular photography, outlines itineraries for ideas and is written very well. It sits on his coffee table and is well read by all his guests.

I've traveled to 28 countries and cumulatively spent 25 months of the last 10 years abroad. My family and friends consider me well-traveled and frequently ask for advice about where they should travel. I have places I remember fondly and can recommend, but travel is so personal, and what is amazing for one person can be lackluster for another. Also, I've been a lot of places, but I haven't actually been EVERYWHERE.So now, when I rattle off recommendations, I also recommend this book. I personally use this book to discover lesser known gems in countries I plan trips to. But it is also useful for novice travelers to discover what the world offers. I purchased a copy of this book for my younger brother who graduated college and wanted to go on a longer term travel adventure but didn't know where he should go. He pored over the book and discovered many places he had never heard of and was able to piece together a rough itinerary.It's also just a wonderful coffee table book: beautiful photography and a great conversation starter.

I like the way the book is organized. In rank order. It also includes a map of the world with the top 100 places marked. This was helpful when I knew I was going to be in one place in the world due to my job and where were the closest cool things to check out.There is just a paragraph or so on each place. Just enough to give a quick summary which means you don't have to read through a bunch of stuff you don't want to to find the places your interested in. This book isn't nearly as good as National Geographic s Destinations of a Lifetime. The book itself is curling up at the corners and the photos won't lay flat. The actual Destinations are good, but many don't have pictures or tell you more than a sentence or two, so it's hard to get excited about the places they are telling you about. That being said, the are some nice photos and the map that is included is quite helpful.

A measure of my like for this book is the fact that I promptly purchased a new copy when my original fell off a table and separated from the spine. You can debate the order of the rankings, and even the inclusion or exclusion of certain sites, but there's no denying that it presents a legitimate list of places worth visiting in your lifetime, assuming you can get to them (hey Iran). Stunning color photography of some of the sites reach out to you from the pages, and the index does a fantastic job of allowing you to search by name, country, or city to zero in on locations. On trips to Germany, Iceland, and Asia, we viewed the suggested list of sites by country and organized our trips around visiting some or all of the suggested sites. If there's a knock on the book it's that obviously opinions will differ on the 500 best places to see, and the information provided on each site is somewhat limited, but otherwise, a fantastic book for anyone bitten by the travel bug.

Simply put, I own over a hundred travel books and this is my favorite. Its sets out 500 destinations, many which you have heard of and many which you have not. Dozens of beautiful photographs of most but not all of the destinations. Its a great idea book and helps create the travel bucket list. No book is perfect and this one has its faults. First, there are no photos for many (one fourth?) of the destinations. No photo for Number Four - The Great Wall of China. Really? And many other missing photos. Second, how can you compile a list of the 500 best places in the world to visit and not include Bali? Third, and this is quibbling, the cover does not do this book justice. I think a few photos would have been better. Still, its a worthy book for travelers and arm chair travelers alike. I gave a copy to friends who have been to more than 100 countries and to friends who have been to 10. All loved it. Highly recommended.

What a beautiful book! I originally intended for this to be more of a research tool to help me decide future travel adventures. However, upon receipt, it's way more high quality and beautiful than I was expecting. Now I don't want it to get beat up and am contemplating displaying it instead, lol... Just to keep other's grimey hands off! I encountered no printing issues from other reviews that had me hesitating before buying. Also, it came with a map that displayed where the top 100 places were located, which I wasn't aware was included. Neat surprise.

Beautiful book, starting from the cover and all the way to the last page. The pictures are breathtaking. Each destination has a small description of the place and little tips when visiting or for how to get there. The index is awesome, is divided into two categories, "themes" and "country", to make your search easier. The only thing I didn't like that much is that as the list goes on, there are no pictures for every destination and the description of each place starts getting shorter and shorter. It makes a very beautiful and thoughtful gift for anyone who wants to travel the world. My boyfriend and I are going to use this book to plan our next travels. Samantha Power, the Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 2013 to 2017 and was previously Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and the Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the National Security Council. She was the founding executive director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and is also the author of Chasing the Flame: Sergio Viera de Mello and the Fight to Save the World--the basis for the award-winning HBO documentary, Sergio--and the co-editor of The Unquiet American: Richard Holbrooke in the World. Greetings Amazonians,Samantha Power’s “A Problem from Hell” is a good read. It is concerned with the history of genocide in the twentieth century and in particular the role that the United State has played in the efforts to deal with the problem. There is a lengthy and interesting discussion of Raphael Lemkin who coined “genocide” and worked for the abolition of genocide and the adoption of the Genocide Convention throughout his adult life.The book provides detailed discussions of the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust and genocide of the Slavs during WWII, the Cambodian genocide of the late 1970's, the genocide of the Kurds in Iraq in late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Rwandan genocide of the ‘90s, and the genocides associated with the Balkans of the ‘90s.I was surprised to learn that the Carter administration was disinterested in and unresponsive to concerns about the events in Cambodia even to the point of choosing to support recognition of the KR regime in the UN as opposed to the Vietnamese invaders who had ended the genocide and forced the KR into the mountains.In a very similar fashion, the Reagan and Bush administrations ignored events in Iraq until it suited the purposes of the US to do otherwise. The Clinton Administration ignored the genocide in Rwanda and even derailed an early agenda coming from the ground which suggested a genocide was being planned and might be prevented.The Clinton Administration eventually responded to the Serbs’ genocides first under Warren Christopher after much blood had been spilled and considerable political pressure applied by Congress, and finally with Madeleine Albright as Secretary of State the US and other Western powers effectively stopped a genocide before it started.Warren Christopher ends up looking pretty bad in this narrative. And, until Albright, the US looks like a nation motivated by financial and diplomatic interests to such an extent that we are more than willing to spend days, weeks months, and years splitting hairs over whether or not this or that is genocide while innocent people are raped and murdered by the thousands by way of an established policy.This is a good read….by the end one is inclined to think we might have made a little progress.Bob Dole looks pretty good in the course of the story and so does George Soros.Enjoy.

Samantha Power's book is a thorough investigation into the various occurrences of genocide and America's reluctance to act, in what I feel to be our greatest foreign policy failure. The pattern is undeniable. We have had access to information in all cases, from Turkey to Bosnia, yet we chose not to do anything for a myriad of reasons. It was only until it was too late that we did anything of substance. Our selfishly narrow view of what constitutes "national interest" is due for expansion, and not for something as vaguely defined as 'terrorism.' The book's greatest point is that we, as the most powerful nation in the world, have a moral imperative to help prevent atrocities. As far as what this book covers, not only does it delve into the history of genocide and Raphael Lemkin's tireless crusade to get it recognized as an international crime, but it examines each case in terms of origin, details of what happened, and the response (or lack of one) from the international community. I found out about this book because the author was an interviewee for the recent documentary WATCHERS OF THE SKY, which I also recommend. It's an oft quoted maxim that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it (or something like that), so hopefully we've learned from our past mistakes.

This was a great read about the United States lack of action during different global genocides. It is an excellent book but it is also one sided (Democrat/ liberal). There are always many reasons America did not act or waited to act, and I feel like other global considerations as well as what was happening stateside was not considered. Legitimately, often times we had military deployed and engaged in different parts of the world where there was genocides happening (Iraq and the Kurds) and when we lost men because we had military on the ground (Somalia). These were totally overlooked and not given much weight. Because of Black Hawk Down and the Marines killed in Somalia only months before Rwanda it isn't surprising we did not enter Rwanda when months before we had actual Marines killed and then their bodies paraded through the streets of Somalia. I think to be fair she could have spared a couple of sentences about why we would have been unwilling to send troops in or at other times engage in any way in different genocides. Otherwise the book is spot on, leaving you wanting better from our country, politicians, and from yourself. She won the Pulitzer for this book.
