The boundaries of Kuwait - already a British protected state - were defined in 1922-3, but as soon as the Emirate gained independence in 1961, Iraq tried to annex it under the misconception that Iraq, as the successor to the Ottoman Empire in Mesopotamia, had a claim on Kuwait. Studied within this historical context, and from a geopolitical perspective, it can be seen as something of an inevitability that Saddam Hussein of Iraq should want to fulfil a long-standing ambition to take Kuwait and become the unrivalled leader of the Arab world.

Based on his years of clinical experience treating battered women, Celani applies object relations theory and case examples from his own practice to show that many women―and indeed some men―are unconsciously drawn to abusive partners because of personality disorders caused by childhood abuse and neglect. He argues that any effective treatment for battered women must help unravel futile and self-defeating patterns, such as ones that spring from fears of abandonment and fascination with men who produce exaggerated promises of love followed by extreme rejecting behaviors.

The Illusion of Love examines the personalities of abusers as well, many of whom suffer from narcissism, a disorder that is also often associated with childhood abuse and neglect. Narcissistic men lash out violently in an attempt to control their own fears or abandonment and to compensate for unsatisfied emotional needs.

Celani concludes that domestic violence is often the tragic result of a union between individuals with complementary personality disorders. His findings fly in the face of the politically correct refusal to examine the behavior of the victim of abuse, a strategy that has led to a severe misunderstanding of the dynamics of the battering scenario. The Illusion of Love calls for primary prevention of neglectful parenting to stem the tide of abuse in the future, offering tangible hope for the treatment of victims of abuse as they attempt to extricate themselves from unhealthy, damaging relationships.

About the Author
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904–1984) was a distinguished scientist, physicist, and engineer. After suffering a crippling injury, he began an intense study of the relationship between bodily movement and healing that culminated in the Feldenkrais Method®.

Judo master Gunji Koizumi was the founder of the Budokai and a pioneer of judo in Europe. 

Michel Brousse,a seventh-degree black belt, teaches the cultural history of sport and the didactics of judo at Bordeaux University in France. He is the author of numerous books and articles on these subjects. A former member of the French national judo team, he currently serves as Research Director of the International Judo Federation. 

Dennis Leri is one of Moshe Feldenkrais’s original American students, with more than thirty years of experience teaching the Feldenkrais Method® and training new practitioners. His martial arts practice includes boxing, aikido, Chen-style T’ai Chi, and Lan Shou Kung Fu. 

Moti Nativ is a Feldenkrais Method® practitioner and martial artist. He leads the Bujinkan Shiki (Awareness) Dojo with branches throughout Israel and holds seminars in Israel, the U.S., Europe, and Japan.
